Memphis inspired chair model

Project type

Textiles

Date

September/October 2025

The scale model of the chair is inspired by the belle air chair designed by peter shire of the memphis milano design movement group. I designed and created the scale chair to assist my knowledge of the style of the memphis design group to prepare for a possible question on my exam. The scale chair was designed with a mix of fabric, stuffing and cardboard. The solid cardboard is used to represent the wooden boards used in the real chair design and the stuffing is used in the arm rests and cushions where real foam inserts would be used in the real chair. The construction was very simple because the felt patterns for the chair were just cut out of sheets and glued onto the chairs structure with hot glue. The cushions were stitched with matching stitch colours to give the effect of having no stitches at all. Overall, this project gave me a good experience into learning how to manipulate textiles and improved my sewing and stitching skills as well as my memphis design movement research.
